Meet Gemma
Nearly 13 years old | Female | Forever Hospice Foster
Gemma would like everyone to know that she is still here, still in charge, and still completely unimpressed by anyone who thought otherwise.
This nearly 13-year-old girl spent much of her life in the commercial breeding world before finding her way to B-Squad. By the time she arrived, she had already lived a whole lot of life — and she came with plenty of opinions about how the rest of it should go.
Then, in January, Gemma was diagnosed with lymphoma.
At that point, we knew her time with us might be limited. She became one of our forever hospice fosters, meaning she would stay in B-Squad care for however long she had, with the focus completely on keeping her comfortable, happy and very, very spoiled.
Apparently Gemma did not receive the memo about anyone’s timeline.
Because here we are months later, and this girl is far outliving what anyone expected.
Honestly, that tracks.
Gemma is stubborn. Gemma is sassy. Gemma has opinions. And we are fairly certain she has decided that leaving this world simply because lymphoma suggested it would be deeply inconvenient.
So instead, she continues to do things her way.
She naps when she wants.
She eats what she wants.
She accepts affection on terms that have been carefully reviewed and approved by management.
And if she disagrees with something you are asking of her, you will know.
There will be no confusion.
After spending so many years of her life without much choice, we absolutely love that her final chapter looks completely different.
Now Gemma gets choices.
She gets soft beds.
She gets snacks.
She gets comfort.
She gets people who adore her.
And she gets to be as stubborn and demanding as her little heart desires.
There is no adoption application coming for Gemma and no forever family left to find.
She already has one.
Gemma will remain with B-Squad for the rest of her life, whether that means days, weeks, months, or — knowing this girl — however long she decides to keep proving everyone wrong.
Her lymphoma and ongoing hospice needs mean she continues to require veterinary care, medications and support, and donations toward Gemma’s continued care are always appreciated.
For now, our nearly 13-year-old hospice queen has a very important schedule to maintain:
Nap. Snack. Sass someone. Ignore medical expectations. Repeat.
And as long as Gemma keeps choosing to stay, we are more than happy to keep letting her run the place.
This version leans much more into her “you don’t tell Gemma when Gemma is done” personality while keeping the medical piece respectful.
