Gemma is a rescue favorite! This girl arrived to B-Squad back in June in pretty rough shape. We've been addressing a laundry list of health items and are in our final phase of her veterinary care. Gemma suffers from IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease). Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a syndrome rather than a disease. The syndrome is caused by a specific reaction to chronic irritation of the intestinal tract. Most dogs with IBD have a history of recurrent or chronic vomiting or diarrhea and may have a poor appetite. During periods of vomiting or diarrhea, the dog may lose weight, but is normal otherwise.
The cause of IBD is poorly understood. In fact, it appears there are several causes. Whatever the cause, the end result is that the lining of the intestine is invaded by inflammatory cells. An allergic-type response then occurs within the intestinal tract. This inflammation interferes with the ability to digest and absorb nutrients. Gemma's IBD is being managed with a special diet and steroids to help keep the inflammation under control.
Gemma has been doing amazing in her foster home. This girl is completely housetrained and ADORES every animal and person she meets! She is always happy and loves laying around in the sun. You won't find a more gentle soul around! Gemma will be available or adoption once she completes her steroid regimen so that we can determine what her maintenance dose will be for healthy management of her IBD.
Gemma will require a home that is able to continue her steroid and special diet for the remainder of her life. It is very important that she not be allowed any other treats, table scraps, or misc items outdoors as this can cause a flare up with her IBD. This girl is loved by everyone that meets her. She is truly a gem and will make a great addition to any family that is looking for a low key love bug!
We are not currently accepting applications for Gemma's adoption until she receives her medical clearance for adoption. As you can imagine, Gemma's veterinary expense while with B-Squad has been significant and worth every penny.
